Nintendo DS fastest selling console in Japanese history

The Nintendo DS is breaking records in Japan, and has now become the fastest selling console in Japanese history, according to reports from the Japanese-language newspaper Kyoto Simbun. The DS and DS Lite have combined for more than 10 million units sold since its launch in December 2004. The DS has reached that mark faster than any other console or portable gaming device in Japanese history.
According to data from M-Create, the DS Lite has sold an average of 166,818 units a week from April 10 to June 11, while the PSP has been relegated to an average of 29,307 units in the same time period. Even more impressive is that fact that the the original (bulky, ugly) DS outsold the PSP at the same time that the DS Lite was on the market. Of course, hardware sales don't mean much unless people are buying games, and the Japanese game charts also boast some impressive sales for Nintendo. Ten titles have reportedly sold more than a million copies.
In that same nine-week time period Nintendo managed to hold onto an average of 6.5 spots in the top ten list of Japanese games sold. These numbers are unheard of in portable gaming, especially since the overall sales in games have shrunk in the same timeframe. What gives?
If you look at the games that seem to be propelling the sales of the DS Lite, a trend becomes clear: from the New Super Mario Bros. to Brain Training 1 and 2 (Brain Age in North America) the games that are selling in quantity include titles designed to be easy to pick up and play. We also reckon that many of them cater to an audience that may not have played many games before; DS English Training, for example, also has held onto its spot on the top ten list week after week. Nintendo looks to be be tapping a combination of classic, easy-to-play games like Mario Kart, Pokemon Rangers, and Animal Crossing along with the "brain" and English training software to draw in new customers to their handheld (and maybe to gaming altogether). Whatever their exact strategy is, it's clearly working.
In the US the DS has also been quite the success, although Sony stated at Comic Con in July that the PSP has outsold the DS by over a million units in the United States. That data did not reflect sales since the release of the DS Lite, however, and we expect there to be a new leader in a few short months, at most.
Will the DS's success rub off on the Wii?

KOLKATA: Microsoft India would launch its seventh generation gaming console 'Xbox 360' in India and seven other countries in September-October.
"Microsoft has targeted to sell 10 million units of Xbox 360 by November this year from 5.5 million sold till June, Microsoft country manager (entertainment) Mohit Anand said on Wednesday.
The company would ultimately cover 40 countries with the high definition product now available in 19 countries, he said.
"New countries will help the company to achieve the numbers. India holds huge potential in volume terms," he told reporters at a roadshow of the gaming console.
India was a market of 1.6 million serious gamers and estimated at USD 50 million. The industry in India was growing by over 100 per cent in the last two years and was expected to continue with the trend in the next five years, Anand Anand said.
Microsoft also planned to use local languages for the games in the console, but further details were not provided. The games would be rated in India for proper parental guidance.
Xbox models would cost would cost between Rs 19,990 and Rs 23,990. They would be distributed by Redington.

Tingle's Rose Coloured Rupee Land

Due for release on 2nd September, 2006 over in Japan, Nintendo's Tingle's Rose Coloured Rupee Land looks just as weird and kooky as the character himself. The company appears to have ditched most of the usual aspects of an RPG, with most of the action focusing around the currency of Hyrule - Rupees. So far the main developer has yet to be uncovered, but many are assuming that either Tose (Legend of Starfy) or AlphaDream (Mario & Luigi) are behind it. There was recent coverage in US magazine Nintendo Power, with a link offered leading to a Tingle survey. Unfortunately that link appears to be dead, but hopefully that does not mean the chances of a translation are equally dead. In the meantime, check out this new batch of screens...

After months of silence Sony Corp. named the launch date and price for the PlayStation 3 on Monday, confirming its place as the most expensive game console yet produced.

The full version of the PlayStation 3 will be priced at US$600 in North America and '600 (US$763) in Europe. It will first go on sale in Japan on Nov. 11, followed by North America, Europe and Australasia on Nov. 17.
The price is double that of the first PlayStation in 1996 and the PlayStation 2 in 2000. Microsoft Corp.'s first Xbox console cost $300, and the Xbox 360, which was launched in November, cost $400.
The announcement caps much speculation about the pricing, sparked when Ken Kutaragi, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., said last year that the machine would be expensive.
There's a reason for the high price. The console is based on the new Cell processor, which has cost Sony, Toshiba Corp. and IBM Corp. billions of dollars to develop, and includes an optical disc drive for the new Blu-ray Disc format.
The disc drive will likely cost around $350 per unit and the Cell processor as much as $230 initially, according to an estimate from Merrill Lynch. The brokerage firm estimated the production cost of each console would be as high as $900 to begin with.
Games consoles are typically sold at a loss to drive demand and expand the user base, with profits made on subsequent sales of software. But a larger initial loss means it takes longer to recover the investment.
Sony said last month that it expects its game division to lose '100 billion (US$896 million) in the year to March 2007 because of start-up and promotional costs associated with the PlayStation 3. It expects to ship 6 million of the consoles during that period.
The console includes a 60G-byte hard-disk drive, a memory card reader, a Wi-Fi adapter and a digital high-definition video connector.
Sony will also offer a lower-end version of the console for $499 with a 20G-byte drive and none of the other features. Both versions will have USB, a Gigabit Ethernet adapter and Bluetooth.
The absence of a HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) digital video connector with the cheaper console might cause problems for users who want to use the built-in Blu-ray Disc drive to watch HD movies. Movies can be encoded to allow HD playback only through an HDMI connector, so without it users might have to make do with a standard-definition picture on movies.
Sony also announced a new controller for the PlayStation 3. A mock-up the company has been showing was criticized by gamers, and Sony now says it will offer a wireless Bluetooth controller with a motion-sensing ability that resembles that of the current controller.

Microsoft rumored to cut Xbox 360 price by US$100

Microsoft is planning to cut the retail price of its Xbox 360 Pro System from US$399 currently to US$299 in an attempt to compete with the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which will be launched by Sony in November of this year, according to Taiwan-based OEM component makers.
Microsoft Taiwan denied the report, asserting that it is misinformation.
Microsoft, to prepare for the price cut, has negotiated reduced production costs for the Xbox 360 with Taiwan-based manufacturing partners, stated the sources. The manufacturers estimate that the total production cost can be reduced by 15-20% due to diminishing costs for most components along with increasing production scales and decreasing defect rates, the sources pointed out.
Considering Sony will sell a 20GB HDD (hard disk drive) and 60GB HDD PS3, each with a built-in blue-laser Blu-ray Disc drive, for US$499 and US$599, respectively, Microsoft plans to maximize the price competitiveness of its Xbox 360 Pro System by dropping prices so that the model can be equipped with an external HD-DVD drive in the future for under US$399, the sources indicated.

Q4 DS Lineup Revealed; Wii Date Teased

Nintendo revealed its Q4 2006 Nintendo DS lineup today, and it's a pretty good one with a strong number of first party titles. The company also teased the Wii date once again.
As part of that teasing, the company hinted that they may just be teasing it for the sake of getting readers to check out their DS lineup. Given that it's as strong as it is, we're going to assume something is really in there after all (unless they knew we'd think that...). So since this article wouldn't be nearly as fun without some baseless speculation, let us indulge in pointing out that the only GBA title mentioned is Final Fantasy V Advance, and it launches...on November 6th. As you may remember, that has been a popular rumored release date for the Wii itself. Elite Beat Agents also launches for Nintendo DS on that day, and if you added in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for GameCube (which would likely launch on the same day as the Wii version) that would give Nintendo at least one new release for every console on that date. Hmm...

Japanese firm launches DS Net Filter

Japanese security software developer Digital Arts Inc. is now offering an Internet content-filtering service for the Nintendo DS Web Browser, according to Nikkei BP. Called i-Filter for the Nintendo DS Browser, the service promises to block Web sites that contain pornographic or other undesirable content for a monthly fee of 315 yen (about US $2.70).
The service uses the Nintendo DS browser's proxy feature to restrict access, eliminating the need to install separate software. Digital Arts claims it has blocked around 5.46 million sites, or over 163 million Web pages. Employees at Digital Arts choose which Web sites to blacklist by inspecting them firsthand--a method the company touts because it means that sites are less likely to be blocked

The ds browser will be coming out on October 6th.

On July 24th, Japanese Nintendo DS owners will be the first to experience the joys of surfing with the Opera browser. The July 21st issue of Weekly Famitsu published the results of a poll asking Famitsu.com readers their thoughts about the upcoming browser, and the results are somewhat surprising.
Of those who responded (since it's pretty much impossible to give results from people who didn't), 55.3 percent showed definite interest in Web browsing on the DS. The reasons that the respondents interests piqued were touch pen support, being able to check Web-based e-mail, and naturally, being able to surf wireless via Wi-Fi stations or at free wireless hotspots.
On the other hand, 27.7 percent stated that they weren't interested in the browser. The reasons that they gave for being underwhelmed by Opera were lack of access to a wireless LAN, no support for Flash and other fancier applications, and they already had other gadgets that they use for portable internet access.
And 17 percent said that they were unsure. So when you get down to it, only half comitted to being interested. We would have thought the number would have been higher. Doing an informal poll here at the office we found that 86% were interested in browsing on the DS. 10% had no idea what a DS was. We tend to avoid those people in the break room.

DS Lites hinge problem

It would appear that a few forum posters are finding they share a common problem with their DS Lites. This problem, which is a very large crack in the top left hinge of the system, appears out of nowhere and from no abuse outside of opening and closing the unit in the way it was intended. Now, not a single one of us here at The Fanboy offices has yet to experience such a horrible circumstance, but what about you fine readers? Could this just be a case of users slamming their DS Lite closed with a little too much force? Or is this a manufacturing error on Nintendo's part? We know the unit can stand up to ridiculous amounts of punishment, so such a small flaw seems to be almost comical, in a sense.

In a triumph for innovation, the dual-screen Nintendo DS portable became America's top-selling video game system of any type in June, according to independent sales numbers just released by the NPD Group. The introduction of the new DS Lite version, featuring a smaller profile and more brilliant display, boosted total sales to nearly 600,000 units, almost double that for any other game device, and alone represented more than a third of total industry system purchases for the month. Beyond the unique technical coupling of dual screens, a touch screen, a microphone and seamless Wi-Fi play, DS popularity also is being propelled by a unique mix of software that appeals equally to mainstream players and those new to the category. New Super Mario Bros. was the industry's top-selling game for the second month in a row, with purchases of more than 450,000 units, while groundbreaking titles Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day and Big Brain Academy combined to sell nearly 350,000 units. In addition, the unique Nintendogs titles combined to sell more than 100,000 units, 10 months after their introduction. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, a wireless gaming network exclusive to Nintendo DS, also now has achieved participation by 1.7 million discreet users worldwide in just eight months, an adoption rate far higher than any other game-play network to date. There's currently a variety of Wi-Fi games to choose from including Metroid Prime Hunters , Tetris DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World and Mario Kart DS, with Star Fox Command DS, Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis and Clubhouse Games launching in the months ahead. At 1.7 million people strong, if the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection community were a city, it would be the fifth largest in the United States, larger even than Philadelphia, Phoenix or San Diego.
